The City of Portland is offering an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Assessor. This is an executive position that provides backup support to the City Assessor in all aspects of administering the assessment process. This position will support the administration of fair and equitable property assessment according to just value.

This position requires critical thinking skills, initiative, and independent judgement. The right candidate will represent the City of Portland and must convey a professional image and excellent customer service.

The ideal candidate will possess or is motivated to acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities to complete assessing duties such as data analysis, data entry, research projects, customer service, and additional duties as required. As assigned, the candidate for this position may assist the City Assessor in completing State mandated reports, preparing research for abatement applications and maintain assessed values for all exempt properties. As an agent of the State of Maine, the Assistant Assessor must be familiar with and adhere to State law. The Assistant Assessor recognizes an annual assessing calendar that includes deadlines and statutory obligations. In practice, the Assistant Assessor will consider all three recognized valuation methods, the income, cost, and sales comparison approaches to value.


Recommended qualifications are as follows:

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques and laws that govern property valuation in Maine.

  • Considerable knowledge of laws, rules and regulations governing real and personal property assessment.

  • Ability to recognize and analyze factors which influence the value of properties.

  • Associate’s Degree or higher level of education or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with taxpayers, municipal employees and elected officials in a municipal office setting.

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Five (5) years’ experience in the assessing, real estate or the appraisal field.

  • Experience as an Assessor or Assistant Assessor in Maine preferred.

  • Certified Maine Assessor designation, or coursework leading to certification within six months.

  • Maine driver’s license, Class C.

  • Computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Office products and specialized assessing, appraisal and GIS software programs.

  • Willing to train a motivated candidate interested in a career in assessing for this position.

Salary & Benefits:


Non-Union position - Grade C52 - Starting salary range - $81,496 to $91,744 annually, based on education and experience.
